Practical Implementation of Level of Information Need – A Case Study

‘Practical Implementation of Level of Information Need – A Case Study’ was presented by Burcu Esen Barutcu, AEC3 Germany, at ‚Satisfying Client’s Need Through Better Information‘ event organized by BIM Regions London.

The case study demonstrates a practical way to define information requirements through utilizing Level of Information Need* and examines the possibilities of automated routines to transfer these requirements into BIM software.

For this purpose ‚BIMQ-Information Requirements Database‘ from AEC3 was used to specify information requirements on ‚Level of Geometry‘ and ‚Level of Information‘.

After the information requirements are determined, reports, property templates, or checking rules were automatically generated from BIMQ. Property templates were used for transferring required properties to Graphisoft ARCHICAD and Autodesk Revit while checking rules were used for model validation in Solibri Model Checker and simplebim. This assured a clear definition of required geometry and information, and measurable and machine-readable requirements.
